Wafaa Belly Dancing History
Originating in the Arabic world, Belly Dancing dates back over 2000 years. The name of this dance in the Arabic countries is 'Raks Charqui' which translates to 'Oriental Dance'. The name Belly Dancing differentiates this form of dance from Indian, Chinese and other cultures dancing.

Although Belly Dancing as seen in films is used to seduce men, the reality is that it was performed by women to entertain women. Furthermore, it was used by women to strenghten the muscles so birth pain is reduced and express feelings and emotions that they weren't allowed to express by words or actions - like love, passion, anger, hatred and various other human emotions. Also, the ability to use the muscles in a sensual and controlled way empowered women and brought forward their femininity which was suppressed by social rules. Belly Dancing is a woman's dance but that doesn't stop men take part when celebrating happy family occasions such as weddings.

Who is Belly Dancing for:
Belly dancing is for women of all ages regardless of shape and size. It's one of the few dance forms that women can dance 'till well advanced in age.
